Picking a book for review
I mentioned in my first post that I would like to do book reviews on here and the time has come to pick the book for the first one. And man, is it hard! I want to pick a good one, so it will be a positive experience for everyone involved, but I don't want to do one I have already read. I think reviews should be done fairly quickly after the read so your thoughts are still "fresh". After a while you know that you thought the book was good, but you forget the specifics that made you like it. And knowing if a book is good before you read it is obviously quite hard. You can read other peoples reviews of it, but it is so hard to know if you would like it based on someone else's opinion. Even if you generally like some of the same books, some books are just so hit-or-miss for me that I might hate it, even though people with similar reading tastes to mine love it.
I also want to pick a stand-alone as beginning with a series seems a big commitment....But boy, is it hard to find a stand-alone these days! It feels like everything is trilogies. And I like trilogies, but they seem to be swamping the market right now. I am sure if I tried a little harder I could find a stand-alone, but I am not afraid to admit that I am quite lazy...so....It might the be first of a series, it might be a stand-alone. Who knows?
For Black Friday my favourite web-bookshop had a sale and I got myself a nice little pile of books. I am just waiting for them to arrive and then I will probably pick one of them for the first review.
I feel like a lot is riding on this first review...like the book I pick will have a significance in branding me as a reader of only certain types of books, but that's just silly, because even if I pick a specific genre, there will hopefully be a lot of reviews of different things on here, which will show that my reading taste spreads beyond any one genre.
