Review: The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

Image
I usually really enjoy Stiefvater's writing, although it often takes me a little while to get into. This book was no different and while it was a little slow at first I really enjoyed it in the end. The book takes place on the island of Thisby around the beginning of the 20th century (I assume. Its never really stated out loud when exactly it is). This island is visited by waterhorses every fall, and the locals catch them, train them and race them once a year in the Scorpio races. This year our main protagonist Kate, Puck to friends, decides to race in order to keep her older brother from leaving the island for the mainland. However, the waterhorses are too wild for her and she decides to race her own horse, born and raised on land. Throughout the book we follow her struggles with family and race officials that think a girl and her land horse does not belong in the races. The book also has a second narrator, Sean Kendrick, who is a master horseman and who has won the races ...

Review: The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater

This is the long-awaited last book of “The Raven Cycle” and I finally got around to reading it. Absolutely everyone hauled it when it first came out, but it took a little while for me to get my hands on it and then it took another good while for me to actually read it. Do you know that feeling of not wanting to read a book because you are afraid it won’t live up to the rest of the series? Well, have no fear, because this one does. We follow Blue and the Raven Boys as their adventures comes to and end. I can’t really say too much about the plot without spoiling the rest of the series, if you haven’t read that yet, but just know that this book is everything the other books are and more. We get closure on pretty much everything, there’s drama, action and love and all of it is well-written and realistic. Plus there is one love story that I for sure thought was fan-made or what you call it but it turned out to be canon!! Woop!  Sometimes I was a bit confused, because it h...

Mini Book Haul!

Image
I have been on a book buying ban, for what feels like ages. And there is no end in sight! But fortunately I was lucky enough to receive a gift certificate for an online bookshop, and I made full use of it recently, so I figured I would share my purchases here.  I ordered these books a very long while ago but for some reason they took months to get to me. But they are finally here and I am so happy about them all, and can’t wait to get started on them.  The first book I bought is “The Raven King” by Maggie Stiefvater. This is the long-awaited conclusion to “The Raven Cycle” about the Raven boys and Blue and their hunt for a mythical king that can grant wished to the one who wakes him from his enchanted sleep. I feel like everyone has already read this book, as it has been out for a while, but I have been avoiding reviews, so I don’t know how it holds up to the rest of the books. But I’m excited to see.  The next book is the first in a duology. It’s...

#SlayThat Series Readathon Wrap-up

Yes, I know, the readathon doesn't actually end until tomorrow, but I finished my book and for various reasons I won't be starting a new one (the main reason being I am reading "The Goldfinch" by Donna Tartt and it's a whopper. And I got it from the library, so there's is a deadline for finishing it!). For this readathon I read "Blue Lily, Lily Blue" by Maggie Stiefvater, which is the 3rd book in the Raven Cycle series. For a long time I thought this was a trilogy, so I was honestly a bit disappointed when I found out I wouldn't get to know the end of the story with the end of this book. But I rallied and I am excited for the 4th book! As mentioned, this is the third book of a series. In my view not much new happened, but the plot was still developed. When I say nothing new happened, I mean there wasn't a new plot point introduced or anything. Everything that happened was part of a plot line from the previous books. And that is okay, beca...

Slay That Series TBR

I’ve decided to participate in my first read-a-thon! I’m quite excited! On Youtube I’m subscribed to this really cool girl called Sara from SarawithoutanH ( Check her out! ) and she is hosting a read-a-thon along with another youtuber called Chami from ReadLikeWildFire .   When Sara presented this TBR I knew it was right up my alley. It’s all about finishing series you’ve started, but haven’t quite gotten around to finishing for some reason or other. The dates are September 27th to October 4th, both days included (which is actually 8 days!). Check out the announcement video here:  Announcement video There are no challenges to this read-a-thon, and that really appeals to me. I’ve never done a read-a-thon before, and this one seems like an easy one to get started. The only rule is pretty much to just read books in series you haven’t finished (or maybe starting a new series, if you are all caught up).  My TBR: My TBR for this read-a-thon will consist of...

Book Haul!!

Image
I bought a bunch of books! Actually I bought them a really long time ago, I just haven't had time to sit down and haul them yet. But now I do, so here they are: Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews This book has gotten so many rave reviews on Youtube, that I thought I had to see what the fuss was about. As stated on the cover it is also now a "major motion picture", and that is usually a sign of quality content. Seeing as these books came in the mail quite a while ago, I have already read this one, and I must say I did not see what the hype was about. A more detailed review will be up soon. We Were Liars by e. lockhart I have also already read this book. And this one was also really hyped on Youtube, but for once I think the hype was true. This book was really amazing, and I absolutely loved it! Again, a more detailed review will be up soon. The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery I know absolutely nothing about this book o...
