Review: Froi of the Exiles by Melina Marchetta

I was debating whether or nor to write a review about this book, as I don't feel like I have too much to say about it. But I wrote a review for the first book in the series, so I figured I should write for the rest of the series as well. Froi of the Exiles is the second book in the Lumatere Chronicles and it follows one of the lesser characters from the first book, Froi. He is off on a quest to another kingdom to seek revenge for events that unfolded before the story of the first book. The blurb on the back of the book is pretty vague, and I don't want to spoil anything, so I can't really go into great detail about the plot. Again, I have to say that like the first book, this one just didn't really interest me. It took me a long time to finish the almost 600 pages. Longer than I would like to think it would usually take me. Because the story just didn't click for me. The characters were again uninteresting to me and I felt like there were so many diff

Carrot Cake Recipe

Image
I'm bringing cake to work for my birthday, and since I was baking anyway, I decided I might as well take a few pictures and share this recipe. Now, I didn't invent this recipe, but I regret to say I have no idea who did. It's one of those that I wrote down in my personal little recipe book years ago, and now I have no idea where it originated. But it's too delicious not to share! So you will need: 200 g soft butter 200 g brown sugar 3 eggs 200 g flour 2 teaspoons of cinnamon 2 teaspoons of baking powder 300 g grated carrots 75 g chopped walnuts And here is how you do it: Whisk butter, eggs and brown sugar. Use an electric mixer or some sort of Kitchen Aid-ey machine. Mix flour, cinnamon and baking powder and alternate mixing that and the carrots/nuts into the eggy mix. Bake at 175 degrees C for 1 hour. (But as always, keep an eye on it. All ovens are not the same!) I usually make a yummy cream cheese

1000 Places to See Before You Die 4 - Dalat, Vietnam

Image
I went to Dalat on my big Asia backpacking trip in 2009. We had been backpacking through Thailand and Cambodia for about 1½ months, and I am not really one for the hot, moist climate in those parts of the world. So when we arrived in Dalat after a harrowing bus trip from Saigon, it was like heaven! Dalat is situated in the mountains in about 1500 m altitude, which makes for a nice cool climate. The book recommends that if you have time you take the bus through some of the beautiful landscapes of Vietnam. That should take about 4 hours. But as mentioned above my friend and I had a horrific bus trip. We were also told it would take about 4-5 hours, but instead it took 9½, and the bus was less than amazing. It died several times going up the mountains, and the seats and airconditioning panels were falling apart. So if you decide to take the bus at least make sure of the standard. Otherwise there are flights available. There are quite a lot of things to see in and around

Me Time Tag

I was inspired to do this tag by Yotube, specifically this video: Booksandquills https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoQnA1WsxLw Original video by Essie Button and Amelialiana https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NcTs4ArSng What do you watch or read during me-time? Usually I will re-read some of my favourite books, like Harry Potter or Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. There is just something comforting about knowing the story beforehand. Then you can really hunker down and enjoy the development and the details of the story without rushing ahead to see what happens next. If I am in the mood to watch something I will also usually watch something I have seen before. Just so I know that it's good and I wont be wasting my time with something I will no t  like in the end. What do you wear during me-time? #nobra Pajama  pants, fluffy socks and a cozy jumper. It's not about looking good, it's all about the comfort! What are your me-time beauty products?

Review: Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein

Holy smokes, this book was just what I needed! Finally a good book after I have been struggling with some less than great books these past weeks. The story is set during World War II and follows two British women who both work in the war effort. The book had me gripped tight right from the start, the writing is beautiful and the story is compelling.  I feel like I shouldn't give too much away about the plot, but basically the two women end up in France behind enemy lines. One of them is caught and questioned by the Gestapo, and she must reveal her mission or face torture.  Beware of spoiler-ish notes below!!! The book is divided into two parts. The first is like a set up of the story and telling how Verity came to be in the Gestapo headquarters. During the entirety of this part the author had me questioning if Verity really was telling the truth or if she was somehow trying to cheat the Gestapo and buy more time for herself. But the story she told, the information she gave away and
