Review: Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor

I recently finished this book, which is the last book of the "Daughter of Smoke and Bone" trilogy by Laini Taylor. The first book of the series is called "Daughter of Smoke and Bone" and the second is called "Days of Blood and Starlight".

I bought the entire series on a whim, because every booktuber on Youtube seemed to be raving about this series. The shop only had the two first in stock, though, so I started reading the series and then I debated whether or not to buy the last one, since the first book didn't really intrigue me that much. But I read the second one, because I already had it (and I have a hard time stopping in the middle of something) and about halfway through this really picked up for me. So I bought the third book to finish off the series.

Beware of a few spoiler-y bits below. Nothing too bad, but if you like going into a book "blind" stop reading here!

The story was epic, including magic, monsters, angels and different worlds, and I think the plot twists were well-constructed and not too contrived. The writing oftentimes seemed long-winded to me; instead of using one or two sentences to create a setting or an atmosphere, the author would use five or six, that basically did the same thing. That got a bit tiring, but luckily the story was good enough to ignore this, whenever is happened.

It is hard to tell too much about this book without spoiling the other two books of the series. I liked that this book continued some story-lines from the other books,  but also set up some new story-lines in order to complete the main plot. I think new characters/story-lines in a third book of a series keeps the reading experience fresh. Of course a third book also has to keep up with the plot and characters from the other books, and this book does that very well.

This is one of those books where everything is winding down to a happy ending, but then you realize some things have not been resolved and with only 20-30 pages to go you wonder how it will all end. I think the ending was good. While my inner romantic would have liked everything to be resolved, the realist in me kinda liked the ending being a bit open and unresolved.

I would recommend this to anyone who likes fantasy. I gave it 3½ stars out of 5 on Goodreads.
