2016 Reading Goals; Bingo Chart Edition
So I saw this video on Youtube by Jean over on Jean Bookishthoughts, and I thought it was a fun idea to challenge your reading style in the new year. I don't normally set myself goals as such, when it comes to my reading. I use the Goodreads challenge, but other than that I pretty much just pick up whatever I want during the year.
But I thought it would be fun to challenge myself as to the actual books I will be reading, and not just the number of books I read during the year. So I made this bingo chart. I've put some "easy" ones in there, that I was probably going to do anyway, like re-reading Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings.
Then I also put some things on it that are definitely out of my comfort zone, like reading poems, short stories, graphic novels and a crime novel. These are all things I don't normally pick up, but I've decided to give it a go in the new year.
There are a few things I've been wanting to read for a while, like a Man Booker shortlisted book, a feminist book and a Bronte book (that isn't Jane Eyre), but that I just haven't gotten around to. This will hopefully help me do that.
Then there are a few specific authors I have been meaning to check out for a while; Shirley Jackson, Jan Guillou and Haruki Murakami. I've also added Dean Koontz, because I've only read one book by him and I love it, so I want to read more. I also added Patrick Ness, because I've read one book by him, and didn't really like it. But everyone raves about him, so I want to give it another try.
I've put reading a vampire book on there, just because I feel like everyone is obsessed with vampires, but I haven't found "my" vampire yet. Not that I can't live without, I've been doing fine so far, but I thought I would add it just for fun, and see what all the hype is about.
Then we have a classic, a historical fiction, modern translated fiction and an adult fiction. I hope I would have read all these genres anyway, but putting them on the list will ensure that I do read them, and hopefully help me be a little more aware of my reading choices.
Finally we have a non-fiction book. I feel like non-fiction kind of falls by the wayside, because let's face it, we are more interested in the hot new fiction book. But some non-fiction can be really interesting too, and I hope to find one of those this year!
Well, that's 20 books I will (hopefully) be reading this year. I usually manage about 60 books, so there should still be time to pick up anything that catches my eye during the year, but this chart will hopefully help me to expand my reading horizons.
