Review: Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

This book has been on my TBR for a while, but I’ve been hesitating to pick it up, because it’s been SOOO hyped. I did also read Bardugo’s other work “The Grisha trilogy” or what it’s called these days, and wasn’t particularly fussed about it. But I have to say this book was way better than the trilogy and I can’t wait to pick up the second book. 

In this book we follow a crew of thieves and outcasts who join together to perform a major heist. All the odds are stacked against them, but for some reason or other each person joins the crew and they set off in the face of almost insurmountable obstacles. The plot is insane, intricate and fast paced from the get go, but the characters are almost better. Every single one of them has a distinct voice and a well developed persona, and we slowly unravel their stories and see what has brought them to be outcasts in the first place. 

As for representation there is a character who uses a cane, there is mention of a number of different skin colors and body types and there is an underlying plot of discrimination against the Grisha, because of their powers. There is also a number of romances, each developed in its own way and suited for the characters. I have my hopes for one romance in particular to really come to fruition in the next book, but I guess I’ll have to wait and see. 

Regarding the challenge, Kaz does use a cane and there is mention of his leg hurting him and hindering him in some ways, but then he can manage without it for shorter times if need be. 


I would highly recommend this book to just about anyone. I gave it 5 stars out of 5.

Reading the classics: The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

The book The book first appeared in Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine in 1890, and the year after it was released as a book in a revised edition. As I am working on this post, I discover that the book is not necessarily considered a classic….great choice for the kick-off post for the series then! However, in my experience, it does usually appear on “classics” lists, so I am going to count it! At the time of the first publication in 1890 it was considered immoral, by a lot of people, but Wilde took offense to that and defended his story. When it was published in book form though, he had changed some things and added a preface, that stated that books cannot be moral or immoral, only well written or badly written.  The author Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was Wilde’s full name, but he later changed it to Oscar Wilde because, as he said, the name was too long for someone who was going to be famous. Review: Across the Universe by Beth Revis

This is the first book in a series, but I have no intention of continuing on with this series. The plot evolves around two young people, Amy and Elder. They live on a spaceship that has left Earth to find a new planet to populate. Amy was part of the cryogeniccaly frozen people on board, meant to be woken up upon arrival and using their skill set to populate the new planet. Elder, meanwhile, is part of the population that has been keeping the ship running whilst it travels towards its destination.  One day Amy is woken up from her frozen sleep and now she must learn to live on this spaceship, without her parents, slowly learning the culture and the secrets of this ship.
