Lazy TBR Challenge July 2018
Books finished
- The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid - 5 stars (TBR book)
- I absolutely loved this book, even though I was a bit apprehensive because of the hype. But then again not a lot of people seem to have read it but those that have absolutely rave about it. And now I’m raving too. The book takes place in two different timelines; modern day and from the 1950s onward. It deals with what constitutes a family, LGBTQIA-themes, forgiveness and family history all shrouded in the glitz and glamour of old Hollywood.
- Who Cooked the Last Supper? The Women’s History of the World - 5 stars (TBR book)
- This is a non-fiction about women’s role in the history of the world. Not the newest resource, as it was published in 1988, but still really well written and informative.
- Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli - 3 stars (TBR book)
- I finally got my hands on a copy of this book which has been all the rage since the movie came out. And I was slightly disappointed. Maybe it was the hype, because it was fun and cute but I expected something more. And I also expected to love Leah and want to read the companion novel about her from all the hype about her specifically. But I just found her to be really negative and annoying and I don’t plan on reading “Leah on the offbeat” (which has been getting mixed reviews anyway).
- World After by Susan Ee - 5 stars (TBR book)
- It’s taken my years to get on to this one after finishing “Angelfall” which is the first in the series. I loved the first book and I think I was afraid of “second book syndrome” with this one, but I finally pulled myself together and read it and LOVED it! This book is no idle space filler or bridge between the start and the finish. It had its own story line and the overall plot moved along nicely too, along with the little sideplots. The series is about the end of days when angels have descended onto the earth but instead of being loving, benevolent creatures they are warrior angels who enslave human kind for their own purposes.
- Zorba the Greek by Nikos Kazantzakis - 2 stars
- I mainly read this because my Greek friend wanted me to. I did not enjoy it….the writing is beautiful but the plot was nonexistent and the misogyny was real. It was a chore to plough through. There were some inklings of a relationship with a “close friend” which I thought seemed interesting but that took up maybe 5 pages in the whole book, and the rest was the two main characters sitting on the beach and talking shit about women.
- The Apocalypse of Elena Mendoza by Shaun David Hutchinson - 2 stars
- I had high hopes for this one since I’ve heard some really good things about it, but in the end I just found that I didn’t really care about any of the characters or the plot. This is about Elena Mendoza who all her life had heard voices from depictions of people or animals. When a shooting happens and Elena heals the person shot things take off from there. Elena is questioning what happens when she heals people and why this is happening and whether or not it is good or bad. She never really figures anything out and neither do we and I need some sort of closure! There was mention of asexuality, but I can’t even remember in what capacity.
Books DNF’ed
- Warcross by Marie Lu
- I decided to read this because I really enjoyed Lu’s “Legend” series. I have also read “The Young Elites” by her and didn’t particularly enjoy it, but since this seemed very different I decided to give it a go. But in the end it was too focused on the computer game and the technical stuff of hacking and playing and I’m just not really interested in that.
Books added to my TBR
- What Would Boudicca Do? Everyday Problems Solved by History’s Most Remarkable Women by Elizabeth Foley
- Girl Squads. 20 Female Friendships that Changed History by Sam Maggs
Books started
- The Joy of Tax by Richard Murphy (TBR book)
- Headstrong: 52 Women Who Changed Science and the World by Rachel Swaby
- Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood
- La Belle Sauvage by Philip Pullman
- Tyler Johnson Was Here by Jay Coles (TBR book)
So that means that I managed to clear some books off of my TBR, but since I added some too, I had to delete one.
Books deleted
- The Wise Man’s Fear by Patrick Rothfuss
- This has been on my TBR for almost 2,5 years and I really don’t think I would ever get to it. The series has been getting a lot of hype these last few years but I don’t think it’s for me. I read the first one years and years ago and wasn’t really that interested. And these books are long! So I’d rather invest my time in something else.
