Book Haul

So I bought some books...again! I have to retract my previous statement of not being one to buy many books/buying new books before I have finished my TBR pile. I still have a few unread books from my last book haul, yet here I am buying more! But I had a voucher that needed spending and there was free shipping....so I had to, right?

Anyway, here are the books:

The first one was actually a birthday gift and it is “Love Poems” by Pablo Neruda. I always enjoy his writing, but this is the first book I actually own of his.



The second book is “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe” by Benjamin Alire Saenz. I actually don't really know anything about this book, but I have seen it raved about on Youtube, so I thought I would give it a try. I just hope it doesn't disappoint me, like a few other Youtube favourites have done lately.



The next book is “Rose Under Fire” by Elizabeth Wein. It is a companion novel to “Code Name Verity” which I read recently and absolutely loved! (Youtube recommendation gone right!). I am hoping this one holds up to the very high standards set by the first book!



Next I bought “Dreams of Gods and Monsters” by Laini Taylor. This is the last book in the “Daughter of Smoke and Bone” trilogy, and I am looking forward to reading it very much. The first book of the series was a little disappointing for me, I have to be honest, and so was the first part of the second book. But the more I read of the second book the more hooked I got, and now I am really looking forward to finishing this series.



The last book I got is a graphic novel. This is very new to me. I don't usually read graphic novels, but I thought I would step out of my comfort zone and get one. I have seen a few recommended on Youtube, and I got “Saga. Volume One” by Brian K. Vaughan (writer) and Fiona Staples (artist). I'm quite excited to read my first graphic novel. Hopefully I will like it!




That was all the books I got this time around. I already have a list for next time they have a sale/free shipping promotion...

Reading the classics: The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

The book The book first appeared in Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine in 1890, and the year after it was released as a book in a revised edition. As I am working on this post, I discover that the book is not necessarily considered a classic….great choice for the kick-off post for the series then! However, in my experience, it does usually appear on “classics” lists, so I am going to count it! At the time of the first publication in 1890 it was considered immoral, by a lot of people, but Wilde took offense to that and defended his story. When it was published in book form though, he had changed some things and added a preface, that stated that books cannot be moral or immoral, only well written or badly written.  The author Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was Wilde’s full name, but he later changed it to Oscar Wilde because, as he said, the name was too long for someone who was going to be famous. Review: Across the Universe by Beth Revis

This is the first book in a series, but I have no intention of continuing on with this series. The plot evolves around two young people, Amy and Elder. They live on a spaceship that has left Earth to find a new planet to populate. Amy was part of the cryogeniccaly frozen people on board, meant to be woken up upon arrival and using their skill set to populate the new planet. Elder, meanwhile, is part of the population that has been keeping the ship running whilst it travels towards its destination.  One day Amy is woken up from her frozen sleep and now she must learn to live on this spaceship, without her parents, slowly learning the culture and the secrets of this ship.
