Creatures of the Night Book Tag

I saw this tag on Youtube and decided it looked like a lot of fun. And with the spooky season in full swing I thought it would be only fitting to recommend some supernatural reading.

I was inspired by Sarawithoutanh, but the original video is here!

TAG QUESTIONS:

1. Vampire
2. Werewolf
3. Zombie
4. Ghost
5. Witch/Warlock/Spellcaster
6. Fairy/Fae
7. Demon
8. Angel
9. Alien
10. Superpowered human

After trying to come up with books to recommend for this I realize that apparently I don’t read a lot of books with “supernatural creatures” or what have you. So I have had to resort to some books that don’t quite fit the bill or books that I haven’t actually read yet for a few of these…But I hope you won’t hold it against me, if I promise to read more about the supernatural in the future!

Here we go:

VAMPIRE

Starting strong, I haven’t actually read any vampire books. That is to say I do vaguely remember a friend of mine forcing me to read some Anne Rice, but since it apparently made no impression on me and I can’t even remember which one it was, I don’t think that should count. So for this book I will have to choose one to put on my TBR. And that book will be “Vampire Knight” by Matsuri Hino.

WEREWOLF

The “Shiver” series by Maggie Stiefvater. This is a little bit of a different take on werewolves than what we normally see, I think. The wolves are dependent on temperature and change in the winter, rather than every full moon. I really liked this series and had a major crush on Sam.

ZOMBIE

The “Beautiful Dead” series by Eden Maguire. These aren’t really brain eating zombies. They are more like the “undead” who are looking to settle some scores before they “pass on”.

GHOST

“Anna Dressed in Blood” by Kendare Blake. This is about the ghost Anna and the ghost hunter Cas, who is out to get her. I don’t normally read scary books, but I really liked this one even though one of the scenes in particular had me shivering in my boots and turning on all the lights.

WITCH/WARLOCK/SPELLCASTER

The “Harry Potter” series obviously, but if we try to be a bit more original, I really liked the “Sweep” series by Cate Tiernan. I was totally in love with Hunter, and I read all the books in a short space of time, during my Wiccan phase (yes, I had a Wiccan phase. Don’t we all?)

FAIRY/FEY

The “Iron Fey” series by Julie Kagawa. I feel like I shouldn’t be recommending this, because as far as I recall I wasn’t that into it. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it either, but since it’s the only book I have read with fey in it, it will have to do.

DEMON

The “Daughter of Smoke and Bone” series by Laini Taylor. Demons abound in this series, as do angels, but it is not all black-and-white, and perhaps you find you’re rooting for someone unexpected.

ANGEL

“His Dark Materials” by Philip Pullman, in particular “The Amber Spyglass”, where Baruch and Balthamos appear. I just find the pair of them so funny and lovely, each in his own way. They sacrifice themselves to look after the kids, and do a greater good.

ALIEN

I remember reading a book about an alien landing, but for the life of me I cannot remember the name of it. Too bad, since I remember it being really good. Of course I have also read “A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”, but I want to suggest something not everyone has already read. So this will have to be another book for my TBR and I picked “The Day of the Triffids” by John Wyndham, as Jean from Jean Bookishthoughts on Youtube always raves about it.

SUPERPOWERED HUMAN

The “Revenants” series by Amy Plum. I really liked this series about so-called revenants, who are protecting humans from evil. I really want to recommend this series, as I have never seen it mentioned anywhere else, and I think it deserves a lot more attention than it is getting.

Those were my recommendations for others (and myself). I hope you find something you want to read, and I will be sure to pick up some vampire, alien and zombie themed books in the near future.
