Rainy Day Reads

So this is the first book I can cross off my bingo chart reading goals for the year. I decided to read a book by Patrick Ness because I’ve heard so many good things about him. I have actually read two by him already “A Monster Calls” and “The Knife of Never Letting Go”. The first was based on someone else’s idea, so I felt like that didn’t really count, and I didn’t really like the second one, mainly because of the writing style, so I decided to give it one more go. And I am glad I did. This was a totally different experience regarding writing style and I liked it a lot more.   The book is about a young boy who drowns. But then he wakes up again in a seemingly abandoned world, all alone and very confused. The story unfolds as he tries to figure out what is going on, and how to survive in this world.  I liked the writing in this book. It is pretty straightforward, but still beautifully executed. This book is from my most recent book haul. I bought it because I have been hearing so many good things about Patrick Ness and his writing on Youtube, that I thought this could only go well. But I must confess I was pretty disappointed in this book. I did not really like the writing style, but I think (hope) that it is unique to this book as it fits the story and the narrator. So I won’t give up on Patrick Ness just yet! But let’s start from the beginning! This book is the first in a trilogy called “Chaos Walking”. I must confess I did not really research what the book was about before I bought it. I had just heard it was some form of fantasy and I figured I would give it a go. It is about settlers from Earth who are now inhabiting a different planet. The narrator is a young boy, Todd, who eagerly awaits his thirteenth birthday when he will become a man. I bought a bunch of books! Actually I bought them a really long time ago, I just haven't had time to sit down and haul them yet. But now I do, so here they are: Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews This book has gotten so many rave reviews on Youtube, that I thought I had to see what the fuss was about. As stated on the cover it is also now a "major motion picture", and that is usually a sign of quality content. Seeing as these books came in the mail quite a while ago, I have already read this one, and I must say I did not see what the hype was about. A more detailed review will be up soon. This book was written by Patrick Ness, but it is based on an idea from Siobhan Dowd, who passed away before she could finish the book she had in mind. It is illustrated by Jim Kay, and has won both the Carnegie Medal and the Kate Greenaway Medal. Beware of spoiler-y bits below. Nothing too revealing, but it's hard to talk about this book without mentioning a few key points. This book is about a boy who gets visited by a monster. The monster comes to the boy to help him come to terms with what is happening in his life and how he feels about these events. The monster will tell the boy three stories and then the boy has to tell the monster the truth. And that scares the boy, because he is afraid to even admit the truth to himself. The stories the monster tells all take an unexpected turn, but the monster has good reasoning for how these stories end. And these stories make you think about right and wrong and the grey area and what people are willing to do in order to achieve their ...
