Lazy TBR Challenge August

August was ROUGH! I had an exam to resit and then a 3 week course on the other side of the country for my trainee position. Having school and classes all day and being away from my home comforts my brain was not wired for reading too much when the evening rolled around, so I only managed to get a couple of books off my TBR by reading them. I had to delete 4….but I’m pretty happy about the situation now and just hope September will be better. TBR Jar Review: Forever Amber by Kathleen Winsor (DNF)

As you can tell from the title I DNF’ed this book. The story was about a young girl in what I believe was 16th century England. The summary said the book would detail how she was left alone and penniless on the streets of London and how she rose above that and came to be the king’s mistress. It had all the makings of a trashy period romance and I imagine it would have been almost like a “Gone With the Wind” in a different setting. And when I decided to pick up this book I felt like I was in the mood for just that. But moods change and once I had started this book I just wasn’t feeling it. At all. So I decided to put it down after just a few chapters.   What I did read was well written, but the main character of Amber really annoyed me. She reminded me of Lydia from “Pride and Prejudice”, petulant and selfish and feeling herself too good for her circumstances. Reading the classics: The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton

The book:  “The House of Mirth” was serialized in Scribner’s Magazine in 1905, and describes the customs and ways of the wealthy class in New York in the early 1900s. The book is considered her first major work, and Wharton is thought to skillfully criticize and satirize the society it describes.  The author:  Edith Wharton was born in 1862 into the rich society, which she writes about in her books. She was taught at home by a governess, and at an early age started writing stories. At 15 her parents had some of her poems privately published, and at 16 she had finished her first novella; Fast and Loose. At 17 she made her debut into society and was a great success, despite being very shy.  In 1885 Edith married Edward R. “Teddy” Wharton (her maiden name was Jones) and settled in New York City and Newport, Rhode Island.
