TBR Jar Review: Forever Amber by Kathleen Winsor (DNF)

Image
As you can tell from the title I DNF’ed this book. The story was about a young girl in what I believe was 16th century England. The summary said the book would detail how she was left alone and penniless on the streets of London and how she rose above that and came to be the king’s mistress. It had all the makings of a trashy period romance and I imagine it would have been almost like a “Gone With the Wind” in a different setting. And when I decided to pick up this book I felt like I was in the mood for just that. But moods change and once I had started this book I just wasn’t feeling it. At all. So I decided to put it down after just a few chapters.   What I did read was well written, but the main character of Amber really annoyed me. She reminded me of Lydia from “Pride and Prejudice”, petulant and selfish and feeling herself too good for her circumstances. She throws away everything to follow some random man who straight out tells her he won’t marry her, but she is just int...

Review: The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood

I have heard talk about this book for ages, since it is something of a modern classic. For some reason I never understood the plot of the book, and thought it was a Jane Eyre type thing. Don’t ask me why…But perhaps for this reason I never got around to reading it. Having read and loved Jane Eyre I figured that was enough of that. But recently I saw a video on Youtube where it was discussed and the plot briefly summarized. And then I found out that the plot was completely different from what I thought it was. So i ordered it from my library and read it. And liked it! The book is about a dystopian society where women are reduced to one of a few categories. There are the demure Wives, the servant Marthas and the Handmaids. These so-called handmaids are “issued” to the elite families of the society and here they are meant to be impregnated by the husband, so they can give birth to a child for the wife.  We meet our particular handmaid as she starts a new “posting” in the hous...

Review: Shadow and Bone - Leigh Bardugo

This book is the first book in the Grisha series. It is quite short compared to some other fantasy books that can surpass the 500 page mark. This book was about 350 pages, and while that sounds like a long book, they pages were quick to read, as they were rather small and the font was quite large.   As for the plot I liked it. It moved along quite nicely, except for a little bit of a slow patch in the middle, but just as I was starting to wonder what could possibly take up the rest of the book, something happened that took the plot in a completely different direction. As I said, I liked the plot, but it didn’t have me on the edge of my seat most of the time. It just ambled along nicely until the end of the book, when it became more thrilling.  I wasn’t terribly invested in the fate of the characters. I think maybe just because the book was rather short, so the characters were for the most part described and developed rather summarily. But I did think that the set of c...
