TBR Jar Review: The Seventy Great Inventions of the Ancient World edited by Brian M. Fagan

This was my last pick out of my TBR jar, and while I did enjoy it, it did take me a good while to finish. I originally put this book in the jar/on my TBR list because I enjoy lists of things and I love archaeology and history.   This book is a great resource for the beginner, or for one who is just casually interested in ancient history and the like. I did find that some of the topics were a bit large, considering they had to handled within 2-6 pages. “Houses” and “Cereal Agriculture” for example gave a very cursory introduction to the topic at hand, which is understandable as these are huge issues. The book also covers (or tries to) the entire world, so presenting houses in China, Egypt, The Middle East, Europe and the Americas only leaves a very small space for each area and/or time period.  I do think most of the entries managed quite well to give a short introduction and suggestions for further reading are given at the back of the book for each topic, so if ...

Blogmas Introduction

In the past few years I have felt very jaded when it comes to Christmas. I just have not been enjoying it like I used to do. I think it probably has something to do with growing up. Instead of being a kid with no responsibilities having Christmas served up on a platter by your parents, now I have to make Christmas for myself. Obviously I still celebrate with my family, but it’s just not quite the same.   The shops are also starting to get out their Christmas things earlier and earlier, and when you start getting Christmas-cheer thrown at you from the middle of October what little Christmas spirit I have just burns out, before it even gets to December 1st.  I always think that I don’t really care about it, but then I still get a little sad, that I don’t really get in the Christmas spirit. So this year I have decided to try Blogmas as a way of almost forcing myself to get into Christmas again! This will make me have to decorate, get some sort of tree and an advent cale...

Favorite Authors - Introduction

As anyone would, I have a few favorite authors. Some are pretty well known and loved, like J.K. Rowling, some are known, but perhaps not loved as much as I think they should be such as Jane Austen and Erich Maria Remarque. So I have decided to share my favorites with all the world! It could even be interesting for me, since I am what they call a casual fan. If I enjoy a book, or a piece of music, or a film or anything at all really, I am pretty much content just enjoying that work. I’ll probably seek out other work of the same person, but I am not one to memorize details of a person’s life, or look for all the Easter eggs in a Disney movie, or any such thing. I am way too lazy for that. So I don’t necessarily know a lot about my favorite authors aside from the books they have written and I have enjoyed. So this should be educational for me too! Sometimes knowing the back story of the author might help you understand the book in a different way too, which should be a bonus. I look...

The art of limitation

So...I've decided to start a blog. But what will it be about? There are so many topics to write about that it's very hard to choose just one or a few. But in order for this blog to be even somewhat coherent I do think there should be some limits as to the topics. SO what options should  I go for? My daily life (which is quite boring TBH), current events, book reviews, health (probably not, because...Chocolate!....and laziness), my beauty fails (what is the difference between BB creme and foundation anyway?), cooking, DIY, travel...So many options! I guess I will start with what interests me most and what is currently in my life. Which would be books and travel at the moment. A lot of people do book reviews and though it seems like an "easy" place to start (you have something to talk about whitout having to cast about for a subject) I think it is harder than it looks. Most reviews I have seen recently only talk about books they like. And that is all good and well, ...
