Bookish Academy Awards Tag

This post in based on this video on Youtube, where BOOKadoodles has changed the categories for the Oscars to fit books. Which I think is an amazing idea! I think I changed a few of the categories just slightly, but hey-ho!

Best Female Lead:

Queenie from Code Name Verity. SPOILER: She is just so brave and strong and amazing. Read the book and tell me you don’t feel the same! I dare you!

Best Male Lead:

Henry Smart from A Star Named Henry. Okay, he does some pretty shady things, but I feel like he is one of those bad guys, who could have been good, if circumstances had not been against him. And he really believes in the cause and tries to stick to the heart of it, when it starts being about power for the others. And he loves and admires his wife, which is always a good quality in a man.

Best supporting role:

Iko from The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. She is a lovely mix between human and android personality and brings a light note to dark situations.

Zuzana and Mik from The Daughter of Smoke and Bones trilogy by Laini Taylor. They are just so supportive and openminded, and would do anything for Karou.

Best cinematography/plot twist:

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and We Were Liars by e. lockhart. Obviously I can’t go into detail about this, as it would spoil the books for anyone who has not read them yet. But I did not see the plot twist coming in either of these, and holy smokes was it amazing!!

Best book cover:

Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater. I love this style of art work. Not much more to say about it…

Most original plot/world:

A Dream of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor. I think Laini Taylor managed to think up two societies that seem believable and an original magic system to boot.

Best book to movie adaptation:

I only saw Mockingjay Part 2 this year and I was quite disappointed to be honest. I didn’t feel like the cinematography was especially impressive and the storyline was really dragged out.

Which book would be good as animated:

Legend by Marie Lu. I feel like this story line and world would lend itself well to a Hayao Miyazaki style animated film.

Best writer you discovered for the first time:

Elizabeth Wein, author of Code Name Verity and Rose Under Fire. These two are companion novels and while I must say I enjoyed Code Name Verity a bit more because of the plot twist, I throughly enjoyed both these books, and can only recommend them.

Best action in a book:

Scarlet by Marissa Meyer. Towards the end there is a fight scene involving a bunch of different people and a ship. I hope I haven’t revealed too much, but that scene had me going past my bedtime, and there are a few fight scenes, so I had to be specific.

Best music in a movie adaptation:

Again I’ve only seen Mockingjay Part 2 and as far as I recall there is not too much music in it. I remember some scenes that I thought could have benefited from a little dramatic music, but I guess they were going for the “I can hear you breathing/what is that sound in the distance” kind of tension.

Best novella/short book:

Animal Farm by George Orwell. I don’t really know if this qualifies as a short book, but I think it’s the shortest I have read.

Best stand-alone:

Code name Verity. Easily the best book I have read this year!

Best historical fiction/non-fiction book:

Wild by Cheryl Strayed and In the Shadow of the Banyan by Vaddey Ratner. I read the latter for my series “My Travels in Books” and I am really glad I did, as I don't think I would have come across it otherwise.

These are my winners for 2015. What are yours?
