Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag

I saw this making the rounds on Booktube last year and I am sure it will again this year. And so I decided to get in on the action. This tag was co-created by ReadLikeWildfire on Youtube, but I saw it first on SarawithoutanH

So without further ado, let’s get started!

1. Best book you've read so far in 2016.

Aside from my reread of Harry Potter (which doesn’t count as that wouldn’t be fair to other books!) I guess this has to be “The Day of the Triffids” by John Wyndham. I was pleasantly surprised when I read this, as I was reaching a point where I felt like nothing I read really interested me that much. But this book about an “alien” invasion and the fall out from it was so good, and I am definitely checking out more Wyndham soon.

2. Best sequel you've read so far in 2016.

“Winter” By Marissa Meyer. This is the 4th and last book in “The Lunar Chronicles” and it was a kick-ass ending to a series that started out a little slow for me but definitely picked up!

3. New release you haven't read yet, but want to.

“The Raven King” by Maggie Stiefvater. I really like “The Raven Cycle” and I want to finish it, but right now I am on a spending ban, so I need to wait for my library to get it in…

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year.

I don’t really follow the new releases coming up. But I have seen a few of my favorite booktubers talk about new releases and I guess “Three Dark Crowns” by Kendare Blake sounds quite interesting. It is a book about three sisters, each raised to be the queen, but in order for one of them to be crowned, she has to kill the other two. Sounds interesting!

5. Biggest disappointment.

Probably “How to be Both” by Ali Smith. Everyone absolutely raved about it and how great it was, and I was thoroughly unimpressed.

6. Biggest surprise.

Maybe “Angelfall" by Susan Ee. I think I’m slowly moving away from YA, as I get (even) older, so I was a little wary going into this YA dystopian series, but I was pleasantly surprised, both by the writing and the characters. I will definitely be picking up the rest of the series at some point.

7. Favourite new author. (Debut or new to you)

I’ve only read one book of his so far, but I really liked John Wyndham’s writing style, so I’ll be picking up more of his works soon.

8. Newest fictional crush.

As I grow older I find myself not really crushing on people like I used to anymore. But Day from the “Legend” trilogy by Marie Lu or Finch from “All the Bright Places” by Jennifer Niven probably come closest to crushes.

9. Newest favourite character.

I really liked Alexia from “Soulless” by Gail Carriger. She was honest and forward and didn’t care that women in her world are supposed to be shrinking violets. She fought for what she wanted and stood up for herself.

10. Book that made you cry.

I’m coldhearted so it takes a lot for me to tear up, but there have been a few times this year when that happened, including “Harry Potter and the Halfblood Prince” and “All The Bright Places” by Jennifer Niven.

11. Book that made you happy.

“How To Be A Woman” by Caitlin Moran, because she speaks the truth and I felt like we are on the same page.

12. Favourite book to film adaptation you saw this year.

I watched “The Painted Veil” as a movie before I read the book and I am glad I did, because the movie was so much better than the book! Controversial, I know, but it’s true in my opinion.

13. Favourite video you have done so far in this year.

Well, I don’t do videos, but my favorite blog post is probably all of my “1000 Places to See Before You Die” posts. It’s just so much fun to revisit my travels and relive all the great (and sometimes not so great) memories.

14. Most beautiful book you've bought so far this year (or received)

I don’t think I have acquired any books this year :( As I said I am on a spending ban, so the library it is for me! Currently I have “Vengeance Road” by Erin Bowman home from the library and that is a beautiful cover (disregard the ugly sticker).

15. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?

I don’t neeeed to read any, specifically, but I would like to complete my Bingo Chart Reading Challenge, which does include “Lord of the Rings”, specifically. So I guess I will need to finish “The Fellowship of the Ring”.

Well, that was a fun review of my reading so far this year. I hope you enjoyed and feel free to consider yourself tagged, if you want to do it too!
