Blogmas Day 12 - Christmas Party Tips

The holiday season seems like one long line of Christmas parties with food and drink in abundance. At the end of the month all those parties can leave you tired out if you don’t prepare.

Outfit

Be sure to pick something comfortable! Of course you want to look nice, but I try to go for a mix between comfort and style. In Denmark Christmas parties are all about the food! And the drink, to some degree, but mostly the food. So be sure to pick something that isn’t too tight around the waist.

As for shoes, keep them comfortable too. There is sure to be a lot of dancing going on, and you need that exercise to start burning off all the food you’ve just gobbled down. For the same reason I like to put up my hair. All that dancing is sure to create some heat in the room and an up-do will give you a little air. Just make sure it’s a sturdy hairdo that will withstand vigorous dancing.

The same goes for make-up. If you know you will be dancing make sure your make-up will last or bring it to touch up during the evening. Whatever you do, be sure to bring at least your lipstick for touch ups, as this will almost definitely fade with all the eating and drinking going on.

Food and drink

Most times this will be provided. As I said, in Denmark it’s all about the food, and there is a lot of it! So be sure to pace yourself. Hold out for your favorites and don’t feel like you have to eat everything on the table. If you do feel like eating everything, make sure to only sample it and don’t eat your fill in the first dish.

As for drinking I can only give the same advice; pace yourself! This is a marathon and in Denmark most of the drink is beer and snaps (hard liquor), so don’t overdo it. Be sure to have lots of water along with the food, so you don’t drink alcohol, if you are just thirsty.

Dancing

Go for it!! But depending on the setting maybe hold back on the racier dance moves. In these times with ever present smart phones you don’t want a video of your sexy moves making the rounds at the office next week. Or maybe you don’t care. In that case go nuts!

Etiquette

Christmas parties have a reputation for getting a little raunchy sometimes. If the party starts heading in that direction and you don’t feel comfortable, there is no shame in leaving. Alternatively you can make it clear in a polite but firm way that you are not into it, and leave the given situation or conversation. You might get a reputation for being a bit of a prude, but you have to look yourself in the eyes the next day. And with any luck people will be too drunk to remember.

Leaving

Most importantly stay safe! Call someone to pick you up or get a reputable cab service. Make sure you bring all your stuff and if you’re bringing someone home, make sure you won’t regret it in the morning.
